Malevolence

The story begins nearly five years ago. Frank Heisenberg was just getting out of med school. He had his two year internship and was already receiving a job offer at several local hospitals. Frank was excited for he had worked hard to reach this point in his life. Even his divorced parents both showed up. Frank hardly remembers his father, but after his father just stashed away some of the reception food and left, all the hateful memories returned. But today was too important for bad memories. After all the ceremonials his mother came and congratulated him. Frank was happy to see his mother after all these years. Two years later Frank had become a prodigious surgeon. He had learned that his mother had fallen ill. She had fallen victim to an abnormally slow developing blood cancer. The doctors gave her two years of survival at most. Frank went home depressed over his mother’s state, and enraged that even his dexterous surgeon’s hands he could not help her.

For the next two and a half years he visited her every month.  His next visit was a few days early, he brought flowers. As he entered the room he found his mother lying comatose, and his father in the room watching over her. There were two nurses there but Frank still blamed his father for this. He finally mustered up the courage to ask what his father was doing there. The nurse explained that the mothers will stated that Frank’s father was to decide whether to pull the plug or not if his mother was to be in a coma. His father signed the paper and they took her away. A tear formed in his eye; his father was beginning to leave. Frank stood up and yelled at him. “How could you, she was your wife!” Frank’s father replied “She left me and took you away from me” Frank begin to form a tear in his eye, at that moment his father gathered a cocky smirk on his face and pushed Frank aside and left.

When Frank got home he was mad. He took his car out and drove; drove for hours. Frank found an old run down store. He noticed there were no security cameras; rather just bars on the windows. Frank walked in and noticed a clean and expensive looking knife kit. He asked the manager how much the kit was. The price was $150 He figured he could afford it, he drives about 20 miles, and he drives fast. As he reaches an ATM a malevolent darkness seemed to fall around him. He draws out $200 He heads back to the store, making great haste. He buys the knife kit notices an extra pocket and places a surgical scalpel in it. He drives home and hides it under a floorboard that reaches into a crevice in his wall. He knows that no one but him will ever find the knife kit.

Frank went to work the next day, he did not have to perform any surgeries. For the next week it seemed like no one needed surgery. The week went slow for Frank. He spent the time grieving over his mother, and grudging over his father. Frank went straight from work to the bar. He had never been to a bar for his problems before. After he went home and sobered up, he realized avoiding his problems was puerile. For the next few weeks Frank avoided everyone. The only people he saw were the sedated bodies he was performing surgery on. He only left his house to get supplies and for work.

A coworker of his stopped by to check on him, Frank opened the door and she nearly gasped at his cadaverous appearance. Frank not knowing what to do invited her in for coffee. She accepted Franks offer and looked around. His house seemed clean, despite the gathering of dust. As if the house was an image of a life that wasn't there. She was surprised at how hospitable Frank was despite the fact he has avoided people for so long. She almost forgot what she came to talk to Frank about; however she remembered when Frank sat down. “You seem different, has something happened” She asked. Frank responded with. “I’m fine, just getting over something with my family.” Afterwards they talked about work. When she left she said “take care.” Frank became enraged by how the coworker reminded him of his mother. He went to the loose floorboard and got out the knife kit. He began planning.

He put the knife kit in his car. He went to sleep; he decided he should be well rested. When Frank woke up the next day he went to work. He performed his deeds in a seemingly new light. Frank planned his work while doing a surgery. He looked at what he would have to do, and planned it in his head. But he had to be careful because he was working with a person. Frank went home. He precariously grabbed food out of his fridge. He just seemed so different, as if waiting for something wonderful to happen. And he was waiting for something wonderful to happen.

When Frank had finished eating he got into his car. He had a wide smile on his face as he drove carefully to the public trail entrance. He found the little path he made when he was younger that lead up to his father’s house. He was wearing gardening gloves, when he enters his father’s house he makes sure to touch things, leave an imprint of the gloves logo. Then he finds his father passed out drunk. He duct tapes his father to the bed quickly. He reaches for a meat cleaver. He starts butchering his father in a way that resembles how a butcher prepares a steak. He didn't cut with rage. He let the love of his mother guide his cuts. He cut off his father’s left big toe. The same toe his father broke on him when Frank was younger. This cut seemed different, as done for revenge for him instead of his mother. When the bone was all that’s left he snapped it off. He went in the trail behind; but before that, made sure the front door was open. He then followed the trail to the tree with the hollow spot under it. He stowed the toe away there and left. He drove home and had a wonderful sleep.

When at work Frank marveled over the work he had done. He played it over and over again in his mind. He had begun to socialize at work again. Frank was happy. But after a few months, he had to do surgery on a man’s toe. He began feeling guilty. Then he felt angry; then sad. But he reminded himself why he did what he did. But then a warm feeling of happiness filled his body. He finished the surgery. After that day he left his work claiming it was to travel the world. He made it look as though he traveled to Europe. When he does not return back people will look for him there, if they even decide to look for him. But really he stayed, bought a mobile home and begun his journey. To avenge his mother the only way he knows how. Frank visited a diner and listened to the radio playing. The announcer said. “The FBI has begun a nationwide manhunt for a serial killer who breaks off the left big toe of his victims.” Frank smiled, tipped the waitress that looked like his mother, and left.

  1. Just to be clear; the overuse of Frank's name was done on purpose to create a contrast effect to some parts of the story.
